Reinforcement Learning Techniques in Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN)
As part of my bachelor’s thesis, I am currently conducting research at GOSPACE under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Elif Uysal within a project funded by the European Research Council Advanced Grant. The research focuses on exploring flow control mechanisms in Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) by leveraging cross-layer operability between the application and link layers. As part of the initial phase of this work, I established an Interplanetary Overlay Network (ION) testbed to model, test, and evaluate DTN system performance under disrupted communication conditions. This involved deploying NASA's ION-DTN using VirtualBricks to simulate multi-hop DTN environments and successfully demonstrating a functional two-node DTN communication setup. Building on this foundation, I am currently working on integrating NASA's DTNSim to analyze network behavior and investigate the application of reinforcement learning techniques for adaptive flow control and improved network performance in disrupted communication scenarios. As this research is ongoing, detailed technical results and findings will be disclosed only after the successful completion of the work.
